Description:

The South Surrey Interceptor – Delta Section – is a set of twin sanitary sewers, running parallel to Hwy 91, between the grit chamber on River Road and manholes 10E and 10W, just north of 72nd Ave. The sewers are 1,524 mm x 1,829 mm box culverts between manholes 10E/10W and 1E/1W (a distance of approximately 2.9km, 1727mm circular concrete pipe from 1E/1W to 20m south of the grit chamber (a distance of 144m), and 1829mm circular concrete pipe for the remaining 20m. The sewers were constructed in 1978.

Following a series of leaks, Metro Vancouver have performed a condition assessment on the Delta Section of the South Surrey Interceptor. The assessment has identified that the sewer main is in poor condition and requires rehabilitation to prevent further leaks and structural failure. The majority of the main is located in the Burns Bog Nature Reserve and is adjacent to Cougar Creek, as such any leak is particularly detrimental to the environment. A prolonged delay to the rehabilitation may also lead to a more significant failure.

The goal of the project is to rehabilitate the sewer and mitigate the risk of failure. The prime objectives of the Consultant will be to provide a solution that will:

  • Restore the structural and operational integrity of the sanitary sewer network;
  • Provide an internal protective barrier to prevent future hydrogen sulphide corrosion;
  • Provide an approved design that meets the Corporation’s standards and other established design codes and guidelines that will result in operationally safe, efficient and reliable infrastructure that would extend the service life of the sewer for 50 years; and
  • Provide the best remediation or replacement alternative that addresses all challenges of the work in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

The consulting services are required for preliminary design, detailed design, and construction phases of the project. Metro Vancouver have obtained a preliminary options analysis but independently recommending a methodology will be part of the successful consultant’s scope.
